Tips: how to crack food words fast
- Split the category. Fruit? Vegetable? Dish? Sweet? A few yellows usually point to one group — A and N together suggest BANANA, MANGO or ORANGE.
- Remember food endings. -ATO (POTATO, TOMATO), -CAKE (PANCAKE, CUPCAKE), -ERRY (CHERRY), -UP (KETCHUP).
- Mind the doubles: COOKIE, CHEESE, BUTTER, WAFFLE, PEPPER and CARROT all repeat a letter.
- Loanwords break patterns. SUSHI, TOFU, TACO, BURRITO and RISOTTO end in vowels that English words rarely use — try them when the usual endings fail.
